London - The Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, UK, His Excellency Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola OFR, on Saturday 28th October 2023 formally handover to Dr Cyprian Heen as acting Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom at Abuja House, Kensington, London.


Ambassador Isola was appointed as Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, UK, by President Muhamadu Buhari in January, 2021.

While winding up his assignment as Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in a move to return to Nigeria, Ambassador Isola and members of the Nigeria High Commission, on 25th October 2023, met with the Nigeria Diplomatic football team to celebrate their victory in winning both 2022 and 2023 Diplomatic cup and the League respectively.


Ambassador Isola at the meeting told the Nigerian football players of the High Commission, that the win is not only for the High Commission but for Nigeria at large and expressed his gratitude to the coaches and players. 


He added that the victory would not have been achieved if the players were not patriotic.


In response to the warm reception, the coach and players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the High Commissioner for the unwavering support and for making them feel like an integral part of the High Commission, affiliated as family. 


As a gesture of appreciation, the players presented the High Commissioner with a distinguished award, signifying their deep respect and gratitude.


Ambassador Isola tenure marked series of remarkable victories for the Nigerian football team, as they secured five (5) prestigious cups from 2022 to 2023. 


These accomplishments include the DFA-IF League and Diplomatic Cup, 2022 and DFA-IF Diplomatic cup and League 2023.


Also in attendance at the send-forth meeting was the Research Director; Director, Africa Programme at Chatham House, Alex Vines, who expressed great pleasure at witnessing the event and commended the High Commissioner for his significant role in the diplomatic community. 


In a gracious gesture, he presented a gift from Chatham House, symbolizing the organization's appreciation for the strong diplomatic ties and the outstanding accomplishments of the High Commissioner. 


Vines informed the players that the High Commissioner has also succeeded in other diplomatic duties in addition to winning the sport tournament.


To round off the memorable occasion, the Minister/Head of Information, Culture, and Sports (IC&S), Bukar A. Abdulsalam, delivered a closing statement, where he extended his hearffelt appreciation to the players for their unwavering efforts and achievements. 


"This event not only showcased the prowess of the Nigerian football team but also highlighted the strong bond between the diplomatic community and the High Commission, fostering a sense of unity and national pride", he said.


Abdulsalam revealed that the High Commissioner graciously approved all match allowances without any hitches.

"Therefore, all the players are paid for all the matches played", he stated and reiterated the commitment of Ambassador Isola which motivated the players leading to winning the tournament for two consecutive times.

It could be recall that on 1st of September, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Minister of Foreign Affairs recalled all Ambassadors and High Commissioners to return to Nigeria on or before October 31st, 2023. 

Meanwhile, while Ambassador Isola was leaving London, Mr James Holloway, a representative of the Foreign Secretary was at Windsor suite of the Heathrow Airport, London, to bid him farewell.
